Nero's Golden House, with VR

This tour takes you under the Oppian Hill, across Via Labicana from the Colosseum and outside the Forum, into the vaulted halls of Nero's Domus Aurea with a guide and a VR headset. The site is superb and the 3.7 rating is about ticket logistics, so book it only if the official visits are sold out.

Domus Aurea Guided Tour with VR

About this experience

The Domus Aurea is not in the Forum. It lies under the Colle Oppio park on the Oppian Hill, across Via Labicana from the Colosseum, with its own ticket. Nero built it after the fire of 64 AD; his successors buried it, and Renaissance painters such as Raphael crawled in to copy the frescoes. Today it opens only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, mostly by guided visit, at a steady 10°C.

This listing is essentially the official visit resold. The official Domus Aurea price is €26 for the ticket with the educational tour and VR; here it's $86. A coordinator from Once Upon a Time Tours meets you at the corner of Via delle Terme di Tito and Via Nicola Salvi, and the e-ticket arrives by email within 2 days of your visit. One five-star reviewer put it bluntly: "This is the same tour you book from the website directly."

The 3.7 rating isn't about the site. Five-star reviews rave about the frescoes, the scale and the VR reconstruction. The one- and two-star reviews are logistics: guides who didn't show, an English slot cancelled and a replacement never passed to the operator, vouchers sent instead of tickets, hidden ticket pickup, and a group of 26 to 28 when the listing promises 20. It's also non-refundable, with no changes. Try the official shop first, or the better-rated C.I.S. Tours version.

What guests say

★★★★★

The Domus Aurea is an amazing survivor from the past. The size is mind-boggling and the innovative technology it housed is hard to believe. [...] The VR experience was quite moving. You really do experience one room of the Domus as it was.

The knowledgeable guide, graphic and digital representations of the Domus were excellent in explaining the historical context, historical layers, rediscovery of the Domus in the 16th century [...]

An incredible experience to see something not many people get to see. I loved every minute of it! It is chilly underground, so make sure you bring a jacket!

The entry was a bit hard to find from where we entered (By the colosseum) helpful tip… it’s the 2nd entrance on the left. [...] This is the same tour you book from the website directly.

Tips before you book

  • Check the official shop first: the guided ticket with VR is €26.
  • Watch your inbox two days before. The e-ticket comes then, and you need it at the desk.
  • Give every participant's first and last name when you book. The guard can refuse entry otherwise.
  • Bring a jacket in any season: about 10°C and 100% humidity inside.
  • Be at the corner 30 minutes early. Guests lost time hunting for the ticket agent.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Domus Aurea part of the Roman Forum?

No. It's on the Oppian Hill, across Via Labicana from the Colosseum, with a separate ticket. Colosseum and Forum tickets don't include it, and it isn't part of the free first Sundays.

When is the Domus Aurea open?

Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only, with timed visits from 9 a.m. and the last admission at 3.30 p.m. It closes on the first Sunday of the month and on other dates listed on the official page.

Why is the Domus Aurea tour rated 3.7?

Logistics, not the site. Low reviews cite guides who never showed, a cancelled English slot, vouchers that weren't valid tickets, confusing ticket pickup and a group larger than the promised 20. The five-star reviews praise the guides, the frescoes and the VR.

How much is the official Domus Aurea ticket?

€26 for the ticket with the educational tour and VR, or €18 for a ticket-only visit at set slots. This listing is $86 and non-refundable. Our Domus Aurea guide compares every option.
