More of Rome (E & D Guided Tours) · Piazza Venezia

Ancient Rome at twilight

A More of Rome guide walks up to 15 people from Piazza Venezia over the Capitoline, along Via dei Fori Imperiali and through Monti to the Colosseum as the floodlights come on. It never goes inside the Forum or the Colosseum: book it for the views from above and a cool evening walk, not for the ruins up close.

Ancient Rome at Twilight Walk

About this experience

The route on the listing runs Piazza Venezia (10 minutes), up to Piazza del Campidoglio (10), along Via dei Fori Imperiali (15), into the old Rione Monti district (20), past the Borgia steps to the Borgia tower (10), and finally Piazza del Colosseo (20). About 1.5 hours, all outdoors and on foot, after sunset. The Forum lies floodlit below you from the Capitoline and from Via dei Fori Imperiali, and the walk ends in front of the lit Colosseum.

There's no ticket and no entry. Nothing in the inclusions mentions admission, and every stop is marked free. That suits a first evening in Rome, or an August day when the ruins are unbearable at noon. Groups top out at 15, and guests describe guides who keep in touch by WhatsApp and wait for latecomers.

Two odd things on the listing. Its web address still says "Eternal Ghosts of Colosseum, Adults Only", a leftover from an older product: the current walk is a history tour, children from 4 can book, and the adult rate starts at 16. The overview still promises "dark tales", so expect a few grim stories. And there are no headsets; one guest found the guide hard to hear. If you want to walk inside the Forum after dark, the official A Night at the Roman Forum tour runs on Fridays.

  • The floodlit Forum from the Capitoline and Via dei Fori Imperiali
  • Monti and the Borgia steps, off the daytime circuit
  • Ends at the Colosseum lit up at night
  • Groups of 15 at most
  • Cooler and quieter than a midday visit

What guests say

★★★★★

[...] as she artfully guided us to a number of sites (both familiar and less familiar, often seen from a different vantage point and/or illuminated by flood lights against the night sky), all within very reasonable walking distance (and during much the cooler evening hours of August)

Hearing about the history helped me understand this city much better so I would recommend this tour. Also this part of rome is magical at night especially if you want to avoid the heat and the crowds.

Mario was a very knowledgable guide and provided many interesting stories and facts about life in ancient rome, the roman forum, the imperial forums and the colosseum. We were a group of 5, felt like a private tour!

Tips before you book

  • Save the guide's number. Construction around Piazza Venezia makes the meeting point hard to find, and guests who got lost were talked in by WhatsApp.
  • Stand close to the guide. With no headsets, the back of a group of 15 hears less.
  • Wear shoes with grip for cobbles and the Borgia steps.
  • The walk starts around dusk, so the time moves through the year. Check yours on the booking.
  • Book dinner in Monti or near the Colosseum, where the walk ends.
