Colosseum and Forum in one day

One ticket, two sites, five hours on your feet. The order matters less than people think; the heat, the closing time and the one-entry rule matter more.

The standard €18 ticket was built for this day: one timed Colosseum entry and one Forum-Palatine entry within 24 hours of it. Most visitors do both in a morning and an afternoon, and most of them get the timing wrong by putting the open, shadeless Forum at 1 p.m.

Hours below are the Park's for the 2026-27 season; tour times come from each listing's itinerary.

The quick answer

Book the Colosseum slot first, because that is what sells out; the Forum and Palatine fit before or after it within 24 hours. In summer, enter the Forum at 9 a.m., reach the Palatine's shade by late morning, eat outside, and take a mid-afternoon Colosseum slot. In winter (the Park closes at 4.30 p.m. from 25 October, last entry 3.30) take an early Colosseum slot and walk straight into the Forum. Allow 4 to 6 hours, and carry a bottle: there are 10 fountains but little shade.

Can you see the Colosseum and the Roman Forum in one day?

Yes, comfortably. Plan on 75 minutes in the Colosseum, 2 to 3 hours in the Forum and on the Palatine, and an hour for security, walking and a break.

The ordinary ticket limits you to 75 minutes inside the Colosseum, so that half of the day is fixed. The Forum and Palatine take as long as you let them: 90 minutes at a trot, half a day with the SUPER sites. A guided tour of all three runs 2.5 to 3 hours. Esta, in October 2026, on the City Wonders tour: “Tour is 3+ hrs, need to wear comfortable shoes, bring plenty of water”.

What makes the day long isn't distance. It is the stairs in the Colosseum, the climb to the Palatine, and the fact that the Forum gives you nowhere to sit in the shade.

The Colosseum part is fixed at 75 minutes on the ordinary ticket.

Should you visit the Colosseum or the Forum first?

Either works: the 24-hour rule lets the Forum come before or after your slot. Choose the order that puts the Forum in the cool part of the day.

The Park says so outright: “You can book the entrance time to the Colosseum and decide whether to visit the Roman Forum and the Palatine earlier or later” (official ticket page). The Colosseum is shaded inside and works at any hour. The Forum valley is open stone and bakes by noon from May to September.

  • Summer: Forum and Palatine at 9 a.m., Colosseum in the afternoon.
  • Winter: Colosseum early, then the Forum before last entry at 3.30 p.m.
  • Split days: the Forum late one afternoon, the Colosseum the next morning, both inside 24 hours.

Tours fix the order for you: City Wonders goes Colosseum, Palatine, Forum; Crown Tours goes Colosseum, Forum, Palatine.

All three in one go with a guide: the City Wonders tour does the Colosseum first, then the Palatine and the Forum.

What does a one-day plan look like in summer?

Forum at opening, Palatine shade by 10.30, lunch outside at noon, and a Colosseum slot around 3 p.m.

  1. 8.45: at the Largo della Salara Vecchia gate, which opens at 9 a.m.
  2. 9.00 to 10.30: the Forum floor, up the Via Sacra, while the stone is cool.
  3. 10.30 to 12.00: the Palatine: the Farnese gardens and their pines, the views, a fountain refill by the Domus Augustana.
  4. 12.00: out by the Arch of Titus or Via di San Gregorio. Lunch and a sit-down outside the Park.
  5. 15.00: Colosseum slot. Be at the entrance by the Arch of Constantine 15 minutes early; you have 75 minutes inside.

The Park stays open until 7.15 p.m. from the last Sunday of March to 31 August, and until 7 p.m. in September, so a late Colosseum slot works too. July and August highs average 31 to 32°C.

What does a one-day plan look like in winter?

From 25 October 2026 the Park closes at 4.30 p.m. with last entry at 3.30. Take an early Colosseum slot and go straight to the Forum.

  1. 9.00: Colosseum slot (it opens at 8.30). 75 minutes inside.
  2. 10.30: walk two minutes to the Arch of Titus gate. The Forum, then the Palatine.
  3. 12.30: a snack from the vending machines in the Farnese gardens, or a bar of something from your bag.
  4. Until 3.30: the SUPER sites close then if you have the right ticket; the Park shuts at 4.30.

Winter is the better season for this day. The light is low and gold by 3 p.m., the queues are shorter, and you won't be drained by heat. Rain is the risk: the paving gets slippery and there is little cover. Exact dates are in the 2026-27 winter hours post.

How do you deal with heat, shade and water?

Carry a bottle and refill it: the Park has 10 drinking fountains. Do the Forum early and the Palatine, which has shade, at midday.

The Forum valley floor is open stone with almost no shade; the Palatine has umbrella pines and the Farnese gardens. Fountains are at the Vicus Argentarii by the Tabularium, at the south-east corner of the Basilica Iulia, in the Farnese gardens, by the Domus Augustana and on the southern path, plus potable water in all 8 toilets (Park for All page). Rome's round nasoni fountains outside the fence are drinkable too.

Bring a hat; there are about 70 benches across the Park, many by the fountains. Good guides build in stops. George, on the Forum-and-Palatine tour: “She’s also super good about water breaks, bathrooms breaks, and shade (super important on this steamy June day in Roma)!”

Where can you eat and use the toilet?

Outside the Park for food: inside there are only vending machines. Toilets are mostly at the gates, and there is no re-entry, so plan both around your single Forum entry.

Vending machines with drinks and snacks are on the Via Nova, in the Farnese gardens and in the Palatine Stadium. That is all. The obvious lunch break is between the two sites, since the Colosseum is a separate entry: Forum in the morning, eat in the streets of Monti or along Via di San Giovanni in Laterano, Colosseum in the afternoon.

The Forum and Palatine have 8 toilets, mostly by the entrances and exits; the Colosseum has 14 on its first level. Go before you leave one site for the other.

Is it too much for kids, and how hard is the walking?

Most families manage it, especially with a guide who keeps children engaged. Under-18s enter free on official tickets; expect stairs, cobbles and one real climb.

Under-18s go free on the Park's tickets, and the tours charge child rates: ages 2 to 17 on the City Wonders tour, 4 to 17 on the Forum-and-Palatine tour, 6 to 17 on Crown Tours, which also has a youth rate for 18 to 24. Bridget, in October 2026: “My 8 and 11 year old were engaged and our guide MaryLuisa was so knowledgeable and fun. 3 hours went quick”.

The walking is uneven rather than long: Roman paving, steps up to the Colosseum's second level, and a climb to the Palatine that the Park itself describes as brief stretches of steep path. Guests on several tours mention lots of stairs. Wear shoes with grip. Strollers struggle on the Via Sacra; the accessible path described in the entrances guide avoids the worst of it.
